What Is a CNA?

A CNA Works with the Entire Healthcare Team

Certified nursing assistants work with registered nurses, LPNs, and doctors within a medical facility. Some of the types of facilities that CNA’s work in could include hospitals, doctor’s offices, home health care services, nursing homes, and so many other facilities. CN’s are a huge part of the process of helping patients to get the care that they need.

Duties of a CNA

So what is it exactly that CNA’s do? Often they help with taking vital signs of patients or taking down information for RN’s or doctors. They might also help patients with activities that are a part of everyday activity, like getting dressed or eating. The scope of duties for a certified nursing assistant is large because CNA’s are there to help with patient care, housekeeping tasks, and medical tasks as needed.

But CNA’s Do So Much More

While doctors and registered nurses are often busy and rushing from one patient to another, a CNA can often spend a little more time with someone. Certified nursing assistants can offer both emotional support and be there as a literal shoulder to lean on. A certified nursing assistant is there to make sure that everything is going the way that it should for the patient and can get additional help when it’s needed.

Becoming a CNA

There is a huge market for certified nursing assistants, but that’s a good thing. Lots of people who start out as a CNA later go on to seek certification as registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, and even other professional careers in the medical profession. Completing required training in a certified nursing program is the first task and then there’s the testing to earn certification. CNA’s do need to take continuing education courses as well and may need to take additional tests as well to retain certification.

Being a certified nursing assistant is rewarding and can be a great stepping stone into other professions within the medical field. Most people who become CNA’s are looking for a way to help others and to have a rewarding career at the same time. This is definitely a way for you to meet those and other career goals.
