Long-Term Effects of COVID-19
COVID-19 rapidly changed society in more ways than just one; in addition to the physical impact, many are also struggling mentally. While we know so little about this foreign virus, research is continuously expanding our knowledge. The long-term effects of COVID are currently unknown; however, researchers have studied other coronaviruses and have summarized that the effects are similar to those caused by SARS & MERS.
In most moderate cases, those who have previously had COVID experience symptoms such as extreme fatigue, muscle weakness, a fever, lapses in memory, mood changes, digestive issues, loss of taste and smell and a sore throat. These symptoms affect the respiratory system, the heart and the nervous system; however, doctors are not sure how these symptoms will affect those later on in life. Those who are hospitalized due to the severity of their symptoms can experience a number of other difficulties, such as chipped teeth, infection, injured vocal cords, hypotension and the possibility of a collapsed lung, due to ventilator treatment. Upon discharge, ongoing support and rehabilitation is recommended.
According to a study in August 2020, many felt an increase in stress, anxiety, depression and/or sleep as a response to the current pandemic. Unstable mental states tend to stem from financial struggles, loss of employment, isolation, pre-existing health issues and grief during this unprecedented time. While many of these issues are treatable, there has been a loss of hope to many. Because of the large influx of depressive cases, many post-COVID clinics have been opened and currently treat both physical and mental issues. There are also online tools that can be utilized for therapy and counselling.
