What Medicare actually covers

When you qualify, Original Medicare pays nothing out of your pocket for covered home health visits. Medical equipment is the exception, and that runs 20 percent of the approved amount after your Part B deductible. Medicare Advantage plans set their own cost sharing and often want prior authorization, so the answer there depends on your plan.

Qualifying takes a few things at once. A doctor has to certify the need after seeing the patient face to face, the care has to be part-time or intermittent skilled nursing or therapy, and the patient has to be homebound. We're a Medicare and Medicaid certified agency, and we also work with Ohio Medicaid, Passport, waiver programs, and most private insurers.

There's no Medicare payment for help with bathing, dressing, meals, or housekeeping when that's the only care somebody needs. What payment sources do you take?

Medicare, Ohio Medicaid, Passport, waiver programs, and most private insurers. Private duty care is available too if you'd rather pay directly and skip insurance entirely.

Does our doctor stay in the loop?

The plan of care is built from your physician's orders, and the office reports back as the patient's condition changes it.

What if something isn't working?

Who decides which caregiver we get?

The Case Manager does, working from your doctor's orders first and then from the household. Tell us what the week actually looks like, who else is home, and what went wrong with the last arrangement, and we'll match to that.

Can we get help with just bathing, meals, and housekeeping?

Yes. Our aides handle bathing, dressing, meals, light housekeeping, and medication reminders, with a licensed nurse supervising the plan. Medicare only pays for aide visits alongside ordered skilled care, but Ohio Medicaid, Passport, and waiver programs cover ongoing daily help for many families, and private duty care is there when you'd rather pay for help directly. What does homebound actually mean?

There are two tests and Medicare applies both. Leaving home has to be medically inadvisable or take help from another person or a device, and the patient has to be normally unable to leave home, with going out taking a lot of effort. It does not mean never leaving. Medicare allows trips for medical care, religious services, adult day care, and the occasional family event.
